Fred Dickenson



Fred Dickenson (1909-1986) was a new police reporter on Chicago’s North Side when gangsters on his beat mowed down seven members of the “Bugs” Moran mob in the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, providing a flying start for a newspaperman. Switching from Chicago to Los Angeles newspapers merely meant a chronicling change from mobsters to murderesses, specifically Winnie Ruth Judd, who stuffed two chums into a trunk and expressed them to the City of Angels. In Oklahoma, Dickenson accepted a commission as a reserve deputy sheriff but successfully avoided forays into the Cookson Hills in search of “Pretty Boy” Floyd. With the same determination, he trailed John Dillinger through Wisconsin. “Once I almost caught up with him in Milwaukee,” Dickenson said. “After that, I was more careful.” After a further stint in Washington, D.C., Dickenson finally settled in New York City with his wife and three daughters. He became associate editor with King Features Syndicate, and a writer of mystery stories.
