James “Doc” Connor, back from service in the War, has settled into his apartment-based practice, doctoring his friends in Midtown (both shady and upstanding) and the occasional horse at the tracks, to the bemusement of his radio star girlfriend, Katie Storm, and his NYPD pal, Lieut. Eddie Marsh. When a nervous man asks him to look at a dead body, Doc smells a rat, but can’t resist. Thrust into a murder, Doc has to navigate an angry cop and a desperate gangster as he tries to figure out exactly who killed the victim.

Panty Burke, a ‘percentage operator’ at the tracks, has disappeared, and the cops say he’d been forging pari-mutuel tickets and took a powder. Burke’s fiancée doesn’t believe it, and convinces Doc Connor to investigate under his pal Lieut. Eddie Marsh’s nose.

Doc Connor is called to the body of a horse—a case of equicide, as it turns out. Strangely, the horse’s owner isn’t interested in whodunnit, but a dead man complicates the matter and it isn’t long before Doc finds himself in a deadly situation.

When an experienced jockey dies in a sweatbox, Doc Connor isn’t convinced that it was an accident. His investigation triggers a dangerous level of attention from interested parties. And, it doesn’t help that he lost the Siamese he was cat-sitting for the lovely Katie Storm!

A Cuban-American woman is beaten to death, and it’s left to Doc Connor to determine if she was murdered by her husband or one of her five brothers. Her murder is linked to the death of a young Cuban boy in the past, but how exactly? Doc takes a trip, and what he learns puts him right in the crosshairs of a killer.
