The Shadow of the Tower
Mihaly Babeti
"I have meditated a long while about the person to whom I should send
these notes and observations. I first thought of simply sending them to
a scientist, but I soon abandoned that idea. I am a scientist of sorts
myself, so I know how unbelieving these people are; they would not
take my story seriously.
"Perhaps, with witnesses chosen amongst my friends, or making them
watch the phenomenon themselves, waiting for it to occur again,
months hence perhaps. .
.
.
"But who would do that for me? I haven’t the time.
"The Almighty has passed sentence on me; He has counted the hours I
have to live, Glory be to His name.
"Happy are those that can accept the will of the Lord, so that is why I am
writing to you, Sir; you, whose calling is to relate and explain creeds
and symbols.
"The thing that happened to me will not enrich humanity’s treasure of
knowledge; science will have nothing to do with such things. Indeed
she is afraid of them, as if she was treading on forbidden ground. It
belongs to the kingdom of fables—fables are sent to us by God, and He
sends very few." . . .
