Darwin and Hildegarde Teilhet



Darwin (1903-1964) and Hildegarde (1905-1999) Teilhet wrote detective novels and thrillers independently, and collaborated on the Baron von Kaz mysteries. Darwin was a bigger-than-life extrovert who started out in advertising; they lived in Pennsylvania, Hawaii and California.

Thomas’ health problems required that they relocate to Colorado, where they supported themselves by writing and by performing magic shows at dude ranches and mountain resorts. Actea wrote several mysteries.

Maurice Coons (1902-1930) wrote under the pseudonym Armitage Trail. While he is best known for his 1930 novel, Scarface, it was preceded by this 1929 mystery, The Thirteenth Guest, and a couple dozen short stories (detective and gangster fiction) in The Underworld Magazine, Detective Tales, and other pulp magazines. Coons’ gangster material was informed by his socializing with Chicago gangsters in the 1920s. When Howard Hughes bought the rights to Scarface (adapted into the 1932 film), Coons moved to Los Angeles. Coons did not adapt well to fame and fortune, as alcoholism and luxurious living quickly took a toll—he died of a heart attack at age 28. After Coons’ death, The Thirteenth Guest was adapted, very loosely, to film twice, in 1932 (starring Ginger Rogers) and 1943 (with Helen Parrish).

Esther Tyler



Esther Tyler (1911-1985) was twenty-five years old and living in Noroton Heights, Connecticut, when this mystery novel was published. Murder on the Bluff was Esther’s sole mystery (published in the UK as The Family Skeleton), but she also wrote short stories for Good Housekeeping Magazine and radio scripts for CBS Radio. She worked as a copy editor for the Greenwich, CT, Time, and as a writer and editor for several businesses. For a number of years she was the executive director of the Connecticut chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.



Murder on the Bluff



Two roommates, Michael and Jimmy, are invited to visit Michael’s elderly aunts, Martha and Barbara Farrington (the Skipper), at their isolated island mansion on Long Island Sound. Aunt Martha likes to play matchmaker, so has invited young Jude Blinshop, while Michael has brought along his own choice in female companionship, temperamental Gay Palmer. A terrible storm washes out the bridge, but the situation becomes dire when a guest is found murdered. Without a way to reach the mainland for help, suspicions arise: is there a hidden murderer on the island, or is someone in the house a killer? Family secrets must be unraveled before death strikes again!
